Where to find circuit benders who are also burners. Oh I know! Tribe!

I had an idea for an art project for this year's Evolution theme on the playa, but its most definitely a collaborative project. So... Here's the abstract, if some of you take a shining to it, great. If not. <shrug>

So, it occurred to me that circuit bending is really an evolutionary art. At its base it involves trying random permutations, keeping the ones that work and tossing out the rest. That in a nutshell is evolution. Circuit bending is in effect electronic mutation, and so it fits into the theme perfectly.

So that's great. But how to make it into a greater art project? Well, make a circuit bent orchestra.

Now this isn't as simple as just gathering a bunch of bent devices and playing them together - that's too simple and doesn't really get to the heart of evolutionary systems which involves interaction. So...

Imagine an old fashioned telephone exchange, with a whole whackamole of sockets and a whole whackamole of cables. Yes I'm talking about live circuit bending, not just within a device, but between devices. The tangled mess would be impossible to reason out, and would be constantly changing as people added and subtracted devices and components or manipulated controls in one place but effecting something in an entirely different place.

The only two things that would remain constant would be A) the power source(s) and B) the audio output. Everything in between would be dynamic.

Does the idea excite anyone? Or does it just seem plain loopy?

Ive only installed a few buttons and sound jack, and still need to figure out the best sauder (i heard rosin core?) wire (something small to thread tiny chip leads?) and button suppliers...

I have a bigger issue now though. I brought in to work (im a highschool music teacher) a toy ive been bending for a while (Musini ftw!) and they managed to kill it within an hour. Lights work, and speakers work with one particular connection that distorts the signal, but otherwise, no sound comes out anymore.
So i brought another toy, and within a few minutes of opening it, it died. Wires are all ok, and i wish i knew exactly what the student hit last before it stopped making noise. I was planning on bending my keytar (my baby) but now im scared!!!

Are there general No-No spots when bending? I try not to connect things directly to the battery. Anyone else have stories about killing toys?

Help! Thanks!

Arduino is an open-source physical computing platform based on a simple i/o board, and a development environment for writing Arduino software. The Arduino programming language is an implementation of Wiring, itself built on Processing.

Arduino can be used to develop interactive objects, taking inputs from a variety of switches or sensors, and controlling a variety of lights, motors, and other outputs. Arduino projects can be stand-alone, or they can be communicate with software running on your computer (e.g. Flash, Processing, MaxMSP.) The boards can be assembled by hand or purchased preassembled; the open-source IDE can be downloaded for free.

I'm trying to get some sellers set up. The shop is pretty barebones right now so I'm on a recruiting mission. hehe. Is anybody interested in selling some of their mods? Shoot me an email and I'll set you up with a sellers account. Do you guys like the idea of the site?

"What happens if you start to restore an old AM battery-operated tube table radio... and put it back together all wrong? The answer - BAMTRAT! (Battery AM Tube Radio Authentic Theremin).

While such a project might offend the sensibilities of collectors, I decided to go ahead with it because this poor old radio had been sitting in my "to do" corner for several years, and I could never quite get the motivation to restore it. After all, the reward for all that work would have been just another AM radio.

Instead, I decided to re-use all the major components to create a tube theremin with as authentic a sound as possible. A novel "differential tuning" approach makes for ease of tuning using the original tuning dial. The close-coupled antenna coil, used as the variable pitch oscillator, duplicates Lev Termen's trick of using hard coupling to provide that unique saw-like classic theremin sound.

Fastmatt's bent devices look really pro and he has these little blue lights (on all of his devices) that change brightness with the sound and also light up your hands. I just wanted to check before dropping $229 on a Speak & Spell (the older one with round buttons).

9 July 2005 - 19 July 2005

40 people have the special opportunity of meeting some of the artists in the line up for 10 days to produce together with them some high quality electronic music! The best tracks made in that time will be released on a special compilation and will be played at Transylvania Calling Gathering 2005. The EMP Workshop takes place in and around of a castle in Transylvania not far from Hermannstadt / Sibiu which is surrounded by massive big walls.

If you ever wanted to have some experienced electronic music producers around you to give you tips and help you out where you get stuck, this is the chance to meet some of them and many others who decided to get into producing electronic music.
here some names :
Tamlin
Sienis
Loopus in Fabula
Squaremeat
Infinitium
Whicked Hayo
Atma & R´Tur

Participants of the Electronic Music Producer Workshop should bring theyr active small speakers, soundcard, headphones and laptops if they have. We will also provide around 10 working spotsYou will make music in groups and get assistance & lessons for fruity loops, cubase and other software from experienced producers. Pepe from Squaremeat will lead the Workshop! cost 10 euro per person and day. You need tent, sleeping bag, camping gear and some euro for food what cost little extra. There might be some sharerooms available for xtra costs in one of the many houses inside the walls, or you can even find another place somewhere in the village cause many people rent out rooms. Or you just camp on the green grass inside the walls which is included in the 10 euro. there is still about 25 spots left! so hurry up! :)

Glitch is from the German glitschen via the Yiddish gletshn meaning to slip. The term is technical jargon in the electronic hardware world to describe what happens when the inputs of a circuit change. When the inputs are changed, the outputs briefly spike to some random value before settling to the correct value. If the circuit is queried during a glitch, a wildly inaccurate response may result. From there it acquired a more general sense meaning any malfunction.

The term gained popular currency through the US space program--which used electronics heavily. In general print, it dates to John Glenn's 1962 book We Seven.

"Sad news: Hugh Davies died on the 1st January, 2005. Born in 1943,
Hugh was a pioneer of live electronic music, an inventor of musical
instruments, a composer, educator, and renowned researcher into the
history of electronic music. An assistant to Karlheinz Stockhausen
from 1964 to 1966, he participated in the recording of Stockhausen's
Mikrophonie I in 1965. Other recordings included wonderful LPs by
Music Improvisation Company and Gentle Fire, and his solo albums for
FMP and Grob. Anybody involved in live electronics, electronic
improvisation, hardware hacking, or, come to that, anybody who needs a
sadly missed."

Perhaps inspired by last week's Hamster powered sequencer, Tim writes to let me know about Peter Blasser, a Baltimore-based circuit bender who has built a synth (Called Din Datin Dudero) with a patchbay controlled by live worms. As the worms wriggle around the contact pins, the circuits inside the synth are modified, and different sounds come out. And Peter is convinced his worms enjoyed touring: "The worms seem to like being electrically stimulated... With the din datin dudero, we can induce all sorts of new sensations in the worms - new waveshapes at new and unfelt speeds... They squirm into action as all the nodes are stimulating them and they crawl around touching thiings together and making it go crazy." Peter also sells synth kits which could well be worm-compatible.

BENT2005
Circuit Bending Festival
CALL FOR WORKS

spaceworks @ The Tank is currently accepting submissions for the BENT 2005 Circuit Bending Festival. The festival will take place from April 27th - May 1st at The Tank on 42nd street in New York City. It is our hope that the festival will be as diverse in its programming as possible, with performances, installations, lectures, workshops, etc, and that it will represent as accurately as possible the interests and talents of the circuit bending community. In addition we are looking to expand this years' festival to include work people are doing with software/hardware manipulation (i.e.- gameboys/computers/nintendos/etc).

Additionally, we are limiting this year's festival to a Wednesday through Sunday schedule instead of spanning two weekends. This will give a more even trajectory to the festivities and help us separate evening concerts and public free-for-all workshops from more focused, intimate and multi-part daytime workshops and events.

This call for works falls into three categories:
Musicians / Performance Artists
Installation Artists
Instructors / Volunteers

--

Musicians / Performance Artists:
We are seeking bands, musicians, and performance artists who somehow incorporate the tools, aesthetics, or ideas of circuit bending into their live performance. We are putting together three nights of circuit bent performances and are interested in as diverse an array of performances as possible. Please send a brief description of your live show, and/or any links to mp3s/photos/websites etc. No attachments will be read or considered. Also feel free to mail us your info. See below for our contact information.

--

Installation Artists:
The Tank includes a basement gallery space, and as such we are seeking 2-3 artists-in-residence who will each receive 15-20 hours of gallery/studio time and as many tools and resources as we can provide to complete a circuit bent installation during the festival. All studio hours in the gallery will be open to the public, and we are most interested in artists who don't mind chatting about what they are doing and explaining circuit bending to gallery visitors who wander through. Please keep in mind that this is a smallish gallery space and your work and your working attitude will have to co-exist with the other artists and their work. Be excited about interacting!
We will have a wide assortment of standard circuit bending tools/equipment (soldering irons, pots/wires/capacitors/resistors/etc/etc/etc) and as much random materials as we can pull together. We will also facilitate a trip to Materials for the Arts to help gather more supplies. (www.mfta.org)

Please submit a written proposal of a circuit bent project that can reasonably be completed in the time allotted with a modest but flexible amount of supplies. See the floor plans of the gallery space at http://www.thetanknyc.org/spaceworks/floorplans.html

--

Instructors / Volunteers
This year we are looking to find people that are interested in leading workshops, presenting talks, and being on-hand during public workshops to help beginners learn how to bend. This year we are considering doing a multiple-day type workshop for attendants that want to work in a more intimate setting and develop more complicated work. Also, when 100 newbies show up and start ripping apart toys (so fun! if you experienced the first day of the festival last year you know what we mean....) it would be great to have dependable people on hand that can help guide them.
Please tell us about yourself and what you do, and how you would want to be involved.

--

FUNDING

A quick word on funding. We have applied for some grants specifically to cover stipends for artists coming to participate and perform in the festival. However, we do not hear the results of this until mid March. As such, WE CANNOT GUARANTEE FUNDING TO PARTICIPATING ARTISTS. As artists and performers ourselves, we realize this is a concern, and we would very much like to compensate you for your talent and your time. We hope this will be possible, but we cannot assure you of any funding until AFTER the open call deadline. Please act accordingly.

--

Submission Deadline March 8, 2005.
Send all submissions to:

None of this would have been possible without the existence of Loopers Delight, founded and maintained by Kim Flint. He just told us that this incredibly informative and exciting website has over 900,000 page views per month now. Thanks Kim for all of your energy, time and financial contribution to this community.

See you all there, I hope!!!!

yours, Rick Walker (festival organizer)

ps Sadly, Concert headliner, Italy's Roberto Zorzi's has had to cancel his tour to the US because of the illness of his partner Paola. Our heart is with them both and we pray for her speedy recovery.

thanks to Konrad from the Cultivated Audio tribe for this.

8-Bit Punk

Malcolm McLaren, the subculture hacker who created the Sex Pistols, discovers the new underground sound. It's called chip music. Can you play lead Game Boy?

We live in a karaoke culture. The Japanese word means "empty orchestra" - a lifeless musical form unencumbered by creativity and free of responsibility. Simple, clean fun for the millennial nuclear family. You can't fail in a karaoke world. It's life by proxy, liberated by hindsight.

Authenticity, on the other hand, believes in the messy process of creativity. It's unpopular and out of fashion. It worships failure, regarding it as a romantic and noble pursuit - better to be a flamboyant failure than any kind of benign success.

Karaoke and authenticity can sit well together, but it takes artistry to make that happen. When it does, the results can be explosive. Like when punk rock reclaimed rock and roll, blowing the doors off the recording industry in the process. Or when hip hop transformed turntables and records into the instruments of a revolution. Now it's happening again. In dance clubs across Europe and America, young people are seizing the automated stuff of their world - handheld game machines, obsolete computers, anything with a sound chip - and forging a new kind of folk music for the digital age.

Until recently, I was feeling stifled by the tyranny of the new. New corporate lifestyles for doing everything well. Too well. iPod this. PowerBook that. Listening to albums, like Madonna's latest, that were made using Pro Tools - software that reduces virtually every mixdown effect to a mouse click - left me with a depressing sense of sameness, like everything on TV. I had decided to make an album about the "look" of music: the visual gestalt of youth culture. For me, music has always been a bridge between art and fashion, the two realms I care about most. It's one of the most natural expressions of the youthful need for confrontation and rebellion. Now it was lost in the hearts and minds of a karaoke world. I couldn't find my place in it.

Then I discovered chip music.

It all began on a freezing winter evening in snow-capped Zurich, Switzerland. Some friends of mine had a vague relationship with a small-label dude who caught my attention at a party rattling on about lo-fi. He soon had me playing phone tag with a clique of "reversible engineers" working illegally in Stockholm. I didn't know what that meant, but I was eager to find out.

The quest led me to the outskirts of Paris: Ivry sur Seine, to be exact, dead south of Chinatown. In that desolate industrial district, I had a 10 pm appointment with two guys named Thierry and Jacques.

The address turned out to be a forbidding, semi-abandoned factory. I couldn't open the gate, so I waited nervously in the darkness. After a while, a suspicious, balding youth came out of the building - Jacques. He seemed to have trouble finding the keys to undo the heavy chains that secured the premises. Finally, the doors swung open. After a terse greeting, he led me up a concrete stairway and through dark, labyrinthine corridors of peeling plaster.

"What's that smell?" I asked, my nostrils assaulted by what seemed like a hot pot of hairy horse and curry powder. "It's the Cameroon embassy," he answered, smirking. Jacques, a shy young man whose teeth were nearly black because of his fear of dentists, explained that wood carvers, graphic artists, photographers, and hip hop kids from North Africa worked here. Only half the factory had electricity or heat.

Two flights up, Thierry welcomed us into a dim, tiny room at the far end of the building. To my surprise, I found myself in an Ali Baba's cave of outdated studio equipment. The chamber was stuffed floor to ceiling with hardware from the dawn of the 1980s: dinosaurian Amigas and Ataris once prized for their sound chips and arcane applications, giant echo plates, and knob-studded analog synthesizers. In the center was a pair of dusty turntables, one with a 45-rpm single on its platter. Thierry put the needle to the groove. I reeled as the record player emitted a din like screaming dog whistles. It sounded like a video arcade gone mad.

The low light revealed the Frenchman's T-shirt. Emblazoned across his chest were the words FUCK PRO TOOLS. The phrase described perfectly what I'd been feeling for months. Like any fashion victim who comes across a new and stylish idea, I was smitten. Fashion is most easily used as a disguise - it allows you to be something you're not. It's much more difficult to use it to express who you are. I understood immediately that this was no facile fashion statement.

"Who made this record?" I asked. In stark contrast to the silent Jacques, Thierry - once he started talking - could hardly stop. "Mark DeNardo from Chicago," he said. This twentysomething Puerto Rican artist, he told me, is the Velvet Underground of the 21st century, the next step in the evolution of rock and roll. "This is chip music," Thierry continued, "made on an old Game Boy. I don't like hi-fi. I can't afford hi-fi. To make this music costs only 15 euros. You can pick up an old Game Boy from the marché aux puces," the Paris flea market. He presented an outdated Game Boy and, maneuvering his thumbs on the keys, showed me how to create musical sequences.

Thierry spun another record. "This is Puss," he explained. "He's from Stockholm. He sings with a girl: 'I'm the master, you are the slave.' They're the new ABBA!" The album cover featured a simple photo of a Game Boy, nothing more. I loved it.

The next record was an EP - an extended-play 7-inch - by a Stockholm artist called Role Model. The last time I had come across this format was in the 1960s, when I bought my first Rolling Stones record. Role Model sounded like a videogame fashion show, as though Twiggy were somehow stuck inside Space Invaders. It was intelligent dance music made using analog approaches, distinctly human and more individual than simply switching on a drum machine. The more I listened, the more contagious it became. The names of emerging artists rolled off Thierry's tongue: Adlib Sinner Forks, Bit Shifter, Nullsleep, Glomag, The Hardliner, Lo-Bat, 8-bit Construction Set - an entire lost tribe of Game Boy musicians.

The room became hazy with the exhaust of these chain-smoking French guys. I felt like I was at the end of the world, but I also thought I could be happy here.

Chip music is made using processors from the antediluvian 8-bit past. (Pro Tools, by contrast, starts at 24 bits.) The genre's seminal moment occurred three years ago when Role Model (real name: Johan Kotlinski) created a custom Game Boy cartridge called Little Sound DJ - LSDJ for short - that takes over the palmtop's internal synthesizer and turns the device into a musical workstation capable of playing sequences and arpeggios, but not chords.

Role Model, who's studying for an engineering degree at Stockholm's Royal Institute of Technology, manufactured LSDJ in Japan and offered it on the Web for about $70 until he sold all the cartridges he had made. The software is a simulacrum of DJ culture, combining the Game Boy's native bloops and bleeps with samples of old drum machines like the popular Roland TR-808. LSDJ isn't the only such cartridge: Nanoloop, made by German art student Oliver Wittchow, does similar things, but without the samples. It's easier to generate sounds right away with Nanoloop, but LSDJ is more musical and therefore more popular.

LSDJ may be technically illegal, but who cares? It's the only way Role Model and his cronies can afford to make their music. It's Le Resistance. Chip musicians plunder corporate technology and find unlikely uses for it. They make old sounds new again - without frills, a recording studio, or a major record label. It would be facile to describe the result as amateurish; it's underproduced because it feels better that way. The nature of the sound, and the equipment used to create it, is cheap. This is not music as a commodity but music as an idea. It's the Nintendo generation sampling its youth.

The essence of chip music is in reverse engineering an electronic interface - whether it's a Game Boy or a computer's sound chip - and subverting its original design. Chip music can be made using run-of-the-mill equipment, like a Casio keyboard, but first the insides must be scrambled. The lo-fi sound of the White Stripes and their ilk has a certain aesthetic kinship with chip music, but it's less tech-centric and not nearly as subversive. Kraftwerk might be the grandfathers of chip music - like today's reversible engineers, they invented many of their instruments. As for programs like Pro Tools, chip musicians don't think they're really creative. The sound isn't generated by circuitry, and you can't alter it by twisting a knob.

As DeNardo puts it, "The digital medium may have more accuracy, but it doesn't have as good a vibe. Playing with an analog machine that has an inaccurate bpm" - beats per minute, the dance-floor gauge of tempo - "can be a bitch. But when you can hear the sequence and feel it, it's like listening to a live band rather than someone singing along with a digital karaoke machine."

The urge to breathe some genuine fire into moribund electronica has spurred the chip music underground to embrace vinyl. When I first met Thierry and Jacques, they were waiting for a shipment of 3,000 EPs from a pressing plant in the Czech Republic. Why do chip musicians insist on using such a perversely obscure medium? In a world where information is free and experience is virtual, delicate vinyl discs, black and fetishistic, are precious. They're treasured, collectible, real. And, unlike CDs, they can't be reproduced easily. Chip musicians scorn CDs as cheap, disposable, and, at best, no more ecofriendly than vinyl.

Chip musicians can be found all over the world, but they're mostly in places where Game Boys are popular - the US, Sweden, Japan, Switzerland. Some are into the technical side of it, like Nullsleep, who graduated from Columbia with a degree in computer science. Others are just into the music. They like being pop-culture pirates, and they have little use for the mass market. Their output is deliberately inaccessible to radio and TV, indeed to anyone in the music industry who still believes in hi-fi. At this stage, they don't necessarily aspire to have an audience beyond that of their own choosing, which means friends. This will probably change. Most early punk gigs - the ones that are continually mythologized - had audiences of about 20 people, though today it seems like everyone was there.

I began working in Ivry Sur Seine, programming Game Boy sequences, then overdubbing analog synths, guitars, and vocals. I sent an MP3 to DeNardo, who, I learned, is a classically trained violinist and keenly aware of Steve Reich's orchestral minimalism and John Cage's I Ching-driven randomness. He'd picked up LSDJ from Björk's Web site thinking it would make his music different. He created a Game Boy sequence to accompany one of my favorite old blues tunes, "Mighty Long Time" by Sonny Boy Williamson. Then he rewrote the lyrics and roughed out the chords on an acoustic guitar. We called the new track "Fashion Horse."

I remained in the factory for the next few months, cutting and pasting the ruins of Jimi Hendrix, John Lee Hooker, and Muddy Waters into a videogame wall of sound. I rocked with Adlib. DeNardo flew in from Chicago. We translated the modernist classical music of Francis Poulenc into Game Boy sequences and arpeggios. I went to China and developed a post-karaoke sound with Wild Strawberries, an all-girl group from Beijing. I found the look of music. This was fashion at its most cutting edge. So chic!

Chip music is still underground, but the scene is becoming less insular. Collaborations are beginning. It's easy to swap MP3s over the Net or daisy-chain a track, sending it to other chip musicians who embellish it in turn. F2F gatherings are starting to rumble in Paris and Chicago. The fashion for record players is growing - just look at the display window of Colette on the rue Saint-Honoré, or in the pages of Jalouse and Vogue. Soon tribes devoted to their favorite retro noisemakers will emerge in bars and clubs everywhere, sliding effortlessly through holes in the karaoke culture, personalizing electronic music and taking it to the next level, whatever that might be. Perhaps it will be games for writing music, or mobile phones with MP3 capabilities that let you listen and modify at will.

Chip music is mutating into a growing taxonomy of styles - post-karaoke, rock-and-roll Game Boy, bastard blues - that represent the most anarchic display of the antihero in pop culture. The sound is raw, noisy, and at times poorly played and sung. Still, repurposing defunct devices to end-run a music industry in total decline constitutes a revolution. Chip music is the final repository of the marvelous, its makers the last possessors of the wand of Cinderella's fairy godmother.

I'm relatively happy with it, although I really wish I had found some loop functions in there somewhere.

Hello. This is the first time I've heard about circuit bending, but I am very intrigued.
Forgive my ignorance on the subject if I'm asking the same question that you've all been asked countless times, but I have very little freetime in my day, and it would save me a great deal of time to simply ask the circuit benders themselves... anyway, I am curious as to what exactly circuit bending is?
I understand the concept, but I would appreciate it very much if someone could give me an idea to what you do electrically to various speak & spells, calculators, etc. to get them to emit these unique sounds.
I'm not sure exactly how technical circuit bending is, if at all, but just by chance if there is someone out there that could draw up a rough schematic or functional diagram? I would love to see exactly what is being done to these poor defensless circuits and begin my own bending ventures.
I have one of these, only without the ROM-pack. And the speaker was missing, as well, so it only has an output. I used the gaping speaker-hole to put in a joystick that controls the pitch on one axis, and fades melody-vs-"percussion" on the other axis. It's a learning-device with lots of LEDs above the keys and some weirdness. I presume having a ROM-pack would be much more fun....
